I’m Dessi and I started Zaggora on my sofa in 2011 by giving away 500 pairs of our Hotpants on Twitter.

With my husband Malcolm, we believed in the power of technology to help people’s lives be healthier, happier and hotter.

Since then, Zaggora has helped over 1 million happy customers in 143 countries get results with 97% saying they’d recommend us to a friend. We weren’t the only ones who believed. Without you and our fans, there wouldn’t be a Zaggora and we wouldn’t have the opportunity to make meaning. For that, we’re thankful every day.

It's been a whirlwind few years since I had the original idea. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Zaggora would become the phenomenon it has. We're grateful every day for all of our customers and fans. Without them, none of this would have been possible.

Zaggora even has famous fans like Denise Richards, Stacy Kiebler and Adrienne Bailon They were all snapped by The Daily Mail wearing our Hotpants in Los Angeles.

But, how did Zaggora begin? You know, in the early days when all I had was an idea.

So, it was 2008 and I was getting married. Before Zaggora, I tried all sorts of things to get into shape before my wedding. I went to the gym, tried yoga, ate all the right healthy foods but nothing was really doing the trick. Like a lot of women, I turned to my mum (don’t they always seem to know best?). She said ‘Well, why don’t you heat yourself up to sweat more?’. Hmmm. Lightbulbs.

This was the simple idea for our first product, Zaggora Hotpants. A product I could wear whenever I was active that would heat me up so I could burn more calories and get results faster.

It needed to have a special lining that would do the heating, be comfortable to wear and most of all – be effective. That’s also where the product name came from, Hotpants, pants that make you hot and help you lose weight.

Here’s a picture of the first Hotpants (don’t worry, we quickly got rid of the HOTPANTS stamp). So, I started researching the Zaggora Hotpants when I was on honeymoon in 2008 and it took me 3 years and 21 prototypes from different suppliers before I found an amazing guy called Mr Hu in Taiwan. He was the first person I felt I could trust, I liked and would deliver for me and our customers (if we ever had any).

Mr Hu was in his late fifties, had a wonderful family and specialised in technology motivated clothing for over 30 years. He was very proud of his work and knew everything there was to know to help me make Zaggora Hotpants. Often people ask how I met Mr Hu (our supplier) and it’s amazing, but I found him when using Alibaba.com.

Mr Hu was the first manufacturer of the fabrics I was looking for. He was also the first who sent me a prototype of Zaggora Hotpants that didn’t fall apart, that were comfortable to wear and most importantly, actually helped me lose weight. Despite over 30 years experience, he was great at the research and manufacturing but not so much the branding or marketing. So, a successful partnership was born.

Oh, how rude of me.

I should have mentioned this earlier, there’s a video we made about all this.

Why was I so excited about Zaggora Hotpants 1.0? Within a few minutes of just standing in them, I started to heat up and feel the tingles. The special fabric was responding to my body heat and I was starting to sweat.

So, I took them out for a run. I ate normally (no crash diets) and wore them every day for about 2 weeks. To my amazement, after 2 weeks, I lost 2 jean sizes. Of course, my husband – who worked in finance – wasn’t convinced. ‘A sample size of 1 is hardly statistically significant’ he said, and he was probably right.

He had the idea to make 20 more Zaggora Hotpants and to give them to friends and family and see what they thought. So, that’s what we did. My mum, my sister, friends – after wearing the Zaggora Hotpants for 2 weeks, all came back with similar results – losing inches from their waist and pounds in weight.

A few years later we gave a few pairs of Zaggora Hotpants to ABC News who ran a trial (not a clinical one) with a few real women. This was their verdict.

Getting Customer Feedback

So, this was getting interesting. If Zaggora Hotprants worked for me, my friends and my family, maybe they could work for lots of women? We decided to test the market and see. At the time, back in 2011, Facebook was the happening place. We’d read some articles about social media success for brands and we thought ‘Wow, this is gonna be easy’.

All we had to do, was setup a Facebook page, invite all our friends, and get them to share our posts about Zaggora Hotpants with their friends, and their friends and … well, you get the idea. Of course, that didn’t work out any more than their are fairies in my garden. In fact, our friend networks on Facebook didn’t much care about this new idea at all. Nobody liked the Zaggora page, and hardly any shared. Even best friends were highly skeptical and refused to write about Zaggora Hotpants.

Major Bummer. So, instead, we tried Twitter. My husband setup a Twitter account for Zaggora and spent 3 months sending tweets to women asking if they’d try a pair of Zaggora Hotpants. Of course, most didn’t reply. He had to send like 3,000 tweets. Some women even reported him to the police for the rather perverted suggestion they ‘try his Hotpants’ and that he was asking them for their home address (to send the product to them, obviously).

I know, ‘The shame‘. But sometimes, you gotta put yourself out there.

The deal we offered on Twitter was simple, after searching for women who tweeted about sports, fitness and gym, we offered them a free pair of Zaggora Hotpants. We were thinking of selling them for $50 or so, but we’d give them away for free in exchange for an honest review on our Facebook page. Eventually, he found around 500 who agreed.

So there we are in May 2011, about to send off to these awesome women who’d agreed to try a free pair of Zaggora Hotpants. We launched the website, shipped off the Hotpants and waited. It worked!

Launching Zaggora

Between May 2011 and July 2013, Zaggora sold over 500,000 Zaggora Hotpants and other products we developed to women all over the world. We won the National Business Award for Ecommerce Strategy in 2012. We were featured as a Harvard Business School Case Study. Zaggora was in The Daily Mail, ABC News Good Morning America.

We grew a fan base of over 500,000 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. 94% of women said they felt they got a better workout with Zaggora. Here’s me and the team with National Business Award, of which my parents were very proud! My husband is holding the award. He liked that.

The first 500 women who kindly tried the product, loved them, came to our Facebook page and wrote great reviews. To this day, their personal Facebook friends. Today, Zaggora is a very different brand and business to the early days. We now sell a whole variety of products, mainly either health foods or active wear. In particular, we’re expanding our health food range to focus on healthy eating because we’ve had so much feedback from people that they want to know what to eat, as well as how to workout.
